Governor O'Malley Delivers Keynote Address at Governing's Conference on Managing Performance

Governor Focuses on Success of StateStat; Address delivered via Video

ANNAPOLIS, MD (October 3, 2008) –  Governor Martin O’Malley today will deliver the keynote address at Governing Magazine’s Managing Performance 2008 Conference.  Governor O’Malley’s address, entitled “Protecting Priorities: Why Good Management is Good Politics,” focuses on Maryland’s performance measuring and management tool, StateStat.  The address will be delivered today via pre-recorded video to the conference participants in Austin, Texas, today at noon, Central Standard Time.

Modeled after the CitiStat program that he developed as Mayor of Baltimore City, Governor O'Malley is using this data-based management approach to make our state government more accountable and more efficient, and to make Maryland's government work again for the people of Maryland.  The CitiStat program has been studied and emulated by countless jurisdictions from around the globe. CitiStat received the "Innovations in Government" Award by Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government, and now Governor O'Malley is bringing these same principles to the management of statewide services.

Governing’s Managing Performance conference is an annual conference for state and local leaders to hear from some of the most accomplished leaders in government today, and to learn about ways that other leaders are addressing serious challenges.

Governor O’Malley was featured in Governing Magazine’s October 2008 issue.  The article can be found at http://www.governing.com/performance/performance.aspx?id=5826.
